Nelson Mandela was the leader of the African National Congress (ANC). He was the first black President to be elected in South Africa. Mandela pioneered the interracial government transitioning a white only government to one of mixed race. In 1964 Nelson Mandela was arrested for treason and sentenced to life in prison; however, he was later released in 1990 due to pressure for his release by the people. He also received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his action against apartheid.
