Ghandi and Women's Rights
Indira Ghandi had no relation to Mohandas Ghandi; however, she also pushed for Women's rights and the end of poverty.
- Indira Ghandi was a child of Nehru and was elected into the Indian Congress in 1955
- In 1965, she became India's first elected PM that was a woman
- In 1975 she declared martial law against an election scandal.
- In 1977 she lost the polls
- Three years later she won a land slide victory
- However, she was assassinated 4 years later by one of her body guards. Many think this is because there were rumors she was corrupt.
- She is also known for exploding India's first nuclear weapon and their very successful war between Pakistan in 1971.
- Once again, another well known activist and leader throughout the mid 1900's was assassinated by one of her own.
